Laxapana Waterfall, one of famous waterfalls in Sri Lanka is located in Nuwara Eliya. It is 129 meters in height and it is the 08th highest waterfall in Sri Lanka. Maskeliya Oya forms this waterfall and Kelaniya River, which is close to the Kiriwan-Eliya village through the nearby Fairlawn Estate, is formed this Maskeliya Oya.
And the nearest town of this location is Ginigathhena. Laxapana Waterfall is recorded as the 625th highest waterfall in the world. This waterfall is most connected with the two hydro power stations that share its name also.The most famous way of getting this attractive location is that visitors should travel along the Avissawella – Nuwara Eliya road (A7) and should turn towards Norton Bridge after Ginigathhena which is the Sri Pada road through Nallathanni. After that, visitors should travel about 08km from Norton Bridge towards Maskeliya and should turn right to “Seven Hills” Farm. After continuing another 03km, visitors can reach to this Laxapana Waterfall.
There are several legends related to this waterfall. One is that locals believe this location where Buddha mended his saffron robe when he was visiting Sri Pada. And another legend is that about a golden receptacle in this waterfall. It is said that a golden receptacle appears beneath the bed of the water, when there is less water due to long drought. It is believed that this wonder brings rain to this area. The Sinhala literarily meaning of “Laxa” is “hundred thousands” and meaning of “pahan or pashanav(pana)” is “rocks”. So, a “hundred thousands of rocks” is the meaning of “Laxapana”. And it has a traditional Sinhalese name also, i.e. “Veddha Hiti Ella” to this Laxapana Waterfall. It means that indigenous local tribesmen’s lived place. After that name, it was transformed to simple “Vedahiti Ella” also.
However, this waterfall has an attractive surrounding. Many hidden caves natural tunnels which were used by early Sri Lanka’s inhabitants are contained at the surrounding mountains of this waterfall.There is a spectacular view of the surrounding Laxapana valley in the cement step path to the base if this waterfall. And visitors can hear a thunderous roar at a distance, when visitors go down towards the lower slopes aright below this lower slope, visitors can find the Laxapana Waterfall.
To relax and revive, the wide base of this waterfall is a good location which is offering plenty of flat rock pools. If anyone will visit this beautiful waterfall, he/she can views across the Maussakele and Dickoya reservations which are a spectacle of sheer natural beauty with rolling hills of different shades of green, dotting the landscape. And there is a huge flat rock formation on the top of this waterfall, that visitors can get there easily, but visitors must ask the direction by locals. In addition to that the white lace like waters fall down beautifully enveloping the base in a magical mist is the other most eye catching thing at the base of this waterfall. Therefore, Laxapana Waterfall is one of famous and beautiful waterfalls in Sri Lanka that should not be missed to explore!
